Building fantastic looking and very realistic trees from scratch doesn’t have to be hard and I’ll show you just how easy it really is. This tree will look fantastic on any model railroad, war gaming terrain or a display diorama and it will add life to any layout. Follow along as I step you through the process I use to create this great looking apple tree. The great part is you can still manipulate the tree to change its shape even after you’ve completed it. It’s a time consuming process but the results are well worth the time and effort. This particular tree is in HO scale, the wire I used scales down well to N scale and it’s simple to use thicker gauge wire to model in the larger scales. I’ll guide you through the process of taking a small piece of foam and turning it into your next masterpiece. Even a small diorama that can fit in the palm of your hand can be full of detail and intrigue. In this tutorial I’ll take you on a journey and show you some interesting techniques for getting great results when it comes to adding detail to very small areas, especially on a small diorama. The techniques used here can easily be applied to all manners of modeling whether you specifically model dioramas or maybe you model war gaming terrain and for all those who build model railways that are HO scale, OO scale or even N scale and O scale then this video will be a good reference for your modeling should you decide to add some of these small intricate details. *Materials List* - BASE - Glass dome display case – Most home depot stores have them otherwise eBay/Amazon KNAUF Foam insulation board – Bunnings Warehouse (Australia) Amaco Sculptamold Jo Sonja’s Fawn Jo Sonja’s Burnt Umber Vallejo Black Rustoleum Flat Black - SCENERY – Dirt Texture – 50/50 mix of a light colored dirt that has been sifted through a stocking and a lighter colored grout (Davco Tumbleweed was the color used). Dirt Mound – Sifted dirt however it has not been mixed with grout, just used the natural color which is much darker and it has been sifted to provide two different grades (Fine - sifted through a strainer & Ultra fine – sifted through a stocking). Static Grass – Mininature, 4-5mm Late Fall, 2mm Late Fall & 2mm Early Fall. Leaves – Real dried leaves put into a blended and then sifted through a strainer to remove unwanted larger pieces. Path – Weathered with Yellow Ochre Pastel - TREE - Salt Bush – A natural plant that grows mostly in desert areas. There’s no cheaper way to make a forest full of trees than finding the perfect armature on the side of the road… However most of the time you find great looking twigs they are either the wrong shape or don’t have enough smaller branches to make a good small scale tree! That’s where this tutorial comes to help, the technique I use here to make these great looking HO scale trees can also be used on any type of tree making exercise whether you are using twigs from the garden, super trees you purchased or even using the plastic tree armatures made by many manufacturers like Woodland Scenics. It can be quite rewarding when you make your own model railroad scenery, and even more so when you actually created it from the bare materials. Rock molds are no different. There is an art to selecting good looking rocks for making rock molds but it’s much easier than you think, a bit of trial and error and you’ll be creating your very own realistic rock masterpiece. These rocks will fit any scale and any type of scenery… from rainforest to desert, rocks are everywhere and there’s no better way to add custom rocks to your model railroad, war gaming terrain or scenery diorama than making them from scratch yourself. The main product required for this project is ‘Woodland Scenics’ Latex Rubber, a fantastic and very versatile product, I not only use it for these rocks but I’ve also used it on model trees and I also use it to make copies of buildings and other building material. The rocks I use in the video are ‘Sandstone’, it’s perfect for this job due to it being very easy to chip away at and you can manipulate it to get the perfect shape to your rock. Here is a quick step by step guide on making homemade static grass tufts. These work great when placing them on your layout and add those fine details the make a railroad truly come to life. They are very easy to make, you can make hundreds of tufts in just minutes once you’re set up! The grass tuft I demonstrate are best suited to HO scale, however the method can easily be adapted to any other modelling scale. If you’re curious I used a Panasonic Lumix G6 to film this video and used a Lumix 14 – 42mm lens as well as an Olympus 40 – 150mm lens. A water scene can dramatically change the look of an already fantastic model and make it look even better! In this easy to follow tutorial I’ll step you through modeling with water from a plain piece of foam board right up to an amazing looking river scene! This model river is made in HO scale however as with most of the tutorials I do the techniques can be applied to not only HO scale but N scale and lager scales as well. The technique I use can be applied for a slow flowing river or stream modeling a lake, modeling rapids and modeling a waterfall as well. I use EnviroTex Lite to model this diorama however most two part epoxies will work just as well and you can also use Woodland Scenics Realistic Water which is an acrylic that is easy to use and easy to clean. A lot of modelers will avoid adding a water scene to their model railroad layout or war gaming terrain because in the past a lot of others have had bad experiences using the various water products however… with some careful planning and proper preparation you should have no problems working with these products. The technique I use for this diorama can be applied in many different scenarios from modelling a dam to modelling white water rapids and they will all look absolutely amazing. When it comes to adding ripples be sure to only apply a thin layer of Mod Podge, if the mod podge layer is too thick it will become cloudy on humid days as it absorbs the moisture out of the air, the Woodland Scenics Water Effects also has the same problem when applied very thick.
